Back-to-school season is here!

It always seems like summer flies by. One minute you’re planning vacations and backyard barbecues, and the next, school supplies are filling store shelves, calendars are getting busier, and families are settling back into their routines.

For many people, the back-to-school season feels like a fresh start. It’s a chance to get organized, create new routines, and prepare for what’s ahead.

The insurance world follows a similar rhythm.

While Medicare Annual Enrollment and ACA Marketplace Open Enrollment are still a few months away, August is when things begin picking up behind the scenes. Insurance companies finalize plans, rates are released, and people start thinking about the coverage they’ll need for the coming year.

Rather than waiting until enrollment deadlines are approaching, now is one of the best times to review your current coverage and ask questions.

Why Review Your Coverage During Back-To-School Season/Before Open Enrollment?

When enrollment season arrives, there are often deadlines, plan changes, and plenty of information to sort through. Waiting until the last minute can make the process feel rushed.

Reviewing your insurance now gives you time to:

  • Understand what your current plan covers.
  • Identify any gaps in your protection.
  • Learn about your options without feeling pressured.
  • Be prepared when enrollment officially begins.

The best insurance decisions are rarely made in a hurry.

Has Anything Changed This Year?

Life changes often mean insurance needs change, too.

Ask yourself if any of these have happened over the past year:

  • You started a new job.
  • You retired or are planning to retire.
  • You got married or divorced.
  • You welcomed a new baby.
  • Your children left for college.
  • You moved to a new area.
  • Your income changed significantly.

Even changes that seem unrelated to insurance can affect your eligibility, your network of doctors, your premiums, or the type of coverage that’s right for you.

Health Insurance Doesn’t Cover Everything

Many people are surprised to learn that even a good health insurance plan can leave them responsible for significant out-of-pocket costs.

Depending on your plan, you may still have:

  • High deductibles
  • Coinsurance
  • Copays
  • Hospital expenses
  • Emergency room costs
  • Out-of-network charges

That’s why many individuals and families also consider supplemental insurance.

Supplemental coverage can help provide financial protection when unexpected medical events happen. Depending on your needs, options may include:

These plans are designed to complement your primary health insurance and can help reduce the financial burden of unexpected medical expenses.

Medicare Enrollment Is Closer Than You Think

If you’re approaching age 65 or already enrolled in Medicare, it’s a good idea to start reviewing your options now.

Medicare Annual Enrollment runs from October 15 through December 7.

During this time, Medicare beneficiaries can:

  • Change Medicare Advantage plans.
  • Switch Part D prescription drug plans.
  • Return to Original Medicare (when eligible).
  • Review whether their current plan still meets their healthcare needs.

Each year, plans can change. Premiums, provider networks, covered medications, and benefits may all be different from the previous year. Reviewing your options annually helps ensure you’re getting the coverage that best fits your needs.

Marketplace Open Enrollment Will Be Here Soon

For individuals and families who purchase their own health insurance, ACA Marketplace Open Enrollment begins November 1.

This is the time to:

  • Compare available plans.
  • Review monthly premiums.
  • Check provider networks.
  • Confirm prescription drug coverage.
  • Update household and income information.
  • See if you qualify for premium tax credits.

Even if you’re happy with your current plan, it’s worth reviewing your options each year since available plans and pricing can change.

Questions to Ask Yourself

Before enrollment season begins, consider these questions:

  • Do I understand what my current plan covers?
  • Am I comfortable with my deductible and out-of-pocket costs?
  • Would supplemental coverage help protect my finances?
  • Have my healthcare needs changed this year?
  • Am I taking advantage of all the benefits available to me?
  • If something unexpected happened tomorrow, would I feel financially prepared?

If you’re unsure about any of these answers, now is the perfect time to start the conversation.

Planning Ahead Makes a Difference

One thing I’ve learned over the past 20-plus years is that the best insurance decisions usually happen before deadlines arrive.

Taking a little time now to review your coverage can help you avoid surprises later and give you confidence when enrollment season begins. Why not add insurance review to this year’s back-to-school season checklist?

Whether you have questions about Medicare, Marketplace health insurance, employer-sponsored benefits, or supplemental coverage, I’m always happy to help you explore your options.

Even if everything stays exactly the same, I’d rather answer your questions today than have you discover an unexpected coverage gap after you need care.

Enjoy these final weeks of summer, have a wonderful start to the school year, and remember that planning ahead today can make enrollment season much easier tomorrow.
